Marine competition Team 1 in the North Sea
The first team in the marine competition got off to a successful start. Emely and Lara from Cuxhaven are researching diatoms and climate change.
According to their findings, diatoms adapt surprisingly well to harsher conditions and also produce most of the biomass and oxygen on our planet. In numerous experiments on their 200-kilometre expedition on board the research vessel between Cuxhaven and Helgoland, the team investigated the different living conditions of diatoms at different depths in the German Bight. Above all, the young researchers wanted to know whether the oxygen production of the small algae for the planet is endangered by climate change.
