Volunteer

Become part of the team

We are always happy to receive volunteer support for our numerous projects, especially in the areas of media design, knowledge transfer as part of our educational projects and events, but we also welcome sailing enthusiasts and diving experts. Permanent or freelance work is also possible at the foundation.

Our ability to support the ocean stands and falls with a strong, competent and committed team. We are always looking for support for our projects, whether you are a marine biologist, diver, media designer, lawyer or event manager. Our work, especially in the media production area and on board, is mainly carried out by volunteers and idealists, often by students and interns, but also professionals who use their vacation to support our activities.

Volunteer work
Our volunteer team currently consists of around 120 people and we are always happy to welcome more to the team. In addition to the volunteers, we also employ a group of almost 40 freelancers from a wide range of professions who support our projects at preferential rates. 

Diploma/bachelor's/master's theses
Students from the fields of engineering and natural sciences, IT, media sciences, media documentation or media design can combine theory and practice at the foundation and write their theses as diploma candidates or bachelor's/master's graduates with the support of our team. 

FÖJ placement in public relations and environmental education
If you are interested in an FÖJ position at the Foundation for the year 2025/26, you can apply now. If supporting us in office management, being responsible for your own environmental education projects and leading workshops for children, young people and families appeals to you, then get in touch. We can offer you an insight into the basics of public relations work, including the development of our website and social media presence. We particularly welcome applicants who have an affinity for water sports and perhaps some diving and/or sailing experience. In this case, an assignment on the media and research vessel ALDEBARAN could also be possible. We look forward to receiving your application via the application portal of the City of Hamburg.

Internships
In addition to full-time and voluntary work, we also offer the opportunity to complete internships. If you are interested you should be available for at least three months so that you can delve into more complex projects and get the most out of your time with us.
