Mission statement
From knowledge to action
Our planet's largest habitat is in danger: overfishing, climate change, rising sea levels, waste, energy production, deep-sea mining and much more threaten our seas and ocean. As diverse as the dangers are, as extensive and far-reaching are the measures required to protect this fragile ecosystem.
The ocean is the most important factor in global climate change, a valuable supplier of resources and an ecosystem worth protecting at the same time. There is a consensus among scientists and experts: time is of the essence and not only the survival of marine life, but also of humans on Earth is not possible without a functioning ocean. It is crucial that the numerous existing recommendations for action for the sustainable development of the ocean are implemented immediately on the basis of the knowledge already available today.
The German Ocean Foundation creates synergies between knowledge and action by involving science, business, politics and society. The aim is to create a lasting partnership with the ocean through broad "ocean awareness": among political decision-makers, opinion leaders, in the economy, among the population and above all among young people, in order to overcome the current lack of responsibility.
