The German Ocean Foundation joins the wave of messages for the High Seas

"We welcome the adoption of the historic High Seas Treaty, which represents a milestone for marine conservation, and welcome the commitment of the German government in signing it. However, real progress depends on swift and decisive action: We urge the incoming government to prioritize ratification so that this treaty becomes a catalyst for meaningful and lasting protection of the High Seas." 

As a member of the High Seas Alliance, an international group of more than 60 NGOs and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the German Ocean Foundation calls on the German government to ratify the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction, which aims to create a protective regime for 50% of the world's ocean beyond national jurisdiction. This area includes some of the most biologically important, least protected and most threatened ecosystems in the world.

The members of the High Seas Alliance work together to inspire, inform and engage the public, decision-makers and experts to support and strengthen the management and protection of the high seas and to collaborate on the establishment of marine protected areas in the high seas.
