Working together to protect the oceans
The German Marine Foundation
The ocean, our planet's largest habitat, is in danger: climate change, rising sea levels, overfishing, pollution, fossil fuel extraction, deep-sea mining and much more threaten our seas and oceans. As diverse as the dangers are, as extensive and far-reaching are the measures required to protect the sensitive ecosystems, from tropical coral reefs or volcanoes in the deep sea to the poles.
There is a consensus among scientists and experts: time is of the essence - not only the survival of marine life but also that of humankind is not possible without a functioning ocean. It is crucial that the numerous existing recommendations for action for the sustainable development of the ocean are implemented immediately on the basis of the knowledge already available today.
The German Ocean Foundation creates synergies between knowledge and action by involving science, business, politics and society. The aim is to create a lasting partnership with the ocean through broad "ocean awareness": among political decision-makers, opinion leaders, in the economy, among the population and above all among young people, in order to awaken a sense of connection with the ocean and the will to protect it.
